President's Corner |
|

The 2004-2005 Officers sincerely appreciate all of the members’ help and assistance this last year. It is now easy to look back and see the contributions that were made by so many people and in such a willing manner. We are definitely a society of volunteers on a mission. There is a lot of love and pride out there for the natural instincts that we feel for art, history, athletics and heritage. President Joe Hood and his crew overcame a natural shyness and volunteered to form a talented board. As the board rotates this year there is a real “love lost” as a former President, Carolyn Barkley, will not be a named officer, but we hope a “subject matter expert” that is the champion of pen & scroll & computer literacy. I am not above begging her to be a contributing factor to all that I can get away with.
Joe Hood spent considerable time and anxiety managing his herd of butterflies, but there was always laughter and thorough camaraderie. He is to be revered for tolerating our unlimited spirits and interruptions and long stories. The proof is certainly in the pudding as we look back at his successful tenure for our twenty-seventh year of a society that never ends.
One change I would like to bring back is that of monthly meetings every month; whether official or more summertime informal. If Vivo’s Restaurant will tolerate us, then let’s keep a good thing going. If one table shows up then we will pick on someone to tell a good story whether it be true or almost true. I know that everyone can begin a good story with, “When I was young things were different…” I’ll be there and everyone can bring a friend and neighbor to eat and greet. I’ll even be there at 6:30 on Monday the Fourth of July as I need to eat and the fireworks do not start until after 9:00!
Plans have already been made for the Prince Charlie-attired St. Andrew’s Day Celebration on November 12 and for the Burns Nicht Supper on January 21.
Keep well and continue the good spirits.

Research into your family’s Scottish roots has been immeasurably enriched by the National Library of Scotland’s digital maps online. A visit to http://www.nls.uk/maps will provide an entry into a fascinating world of the lands of our ancestors beginning as early as 1558 and featuring such major works as the Blaue Atlas of Scotland (1654), Scotland’s first atlas. On the 350th anniversary of its publication, this major cartographic work is provided in translation for the first time in its entirety, complemented by high resolution zoomable images and detailed supporting information and biographies. Most text entries describe each County’s natural resources, minerals, agriculture, and fish caught in the rivers. The names of important families in the County and the names of farms are also included.
Searches can be conducted from a long list of specific locations and time periods thus providing content for multiple generations, while providing a better understanding of the impact of geography on history and our ancestor’s lives.
