Closing Thoughts From the President

It seems hard to believe that a year has passed. Isn’t it always like that when you’re having fun? It’s been a year in which we’ve accomplished much of what we set out to do together. We gained several new members, solved an outstanding membership number issue and presented membership certificates to those who had not received them, awarded two scholarships to very deserving dancers, reinstituted the Scot of the Year award after a lapse of several years, presented a very successful Burns Nicht Supper, added significant new money to the Scholarship Fund and enjoyed the camaraderie of numerous dinners, the annual picnic hosted generously each year by Al and Merrylu Ablowich, and heard speakers present interesting programs at our meetings. All and all a very successful year which could have been accomplished with out the assistance of you the members.

I’d like to thank a few members individually. First and foremost, Charlie Austin, a Trustee for as long as I can remember, who has come off the Board at the end of his most recent term. Charlie is always there volunteering to help out, making connections with his knowledge of virtually anyone who has ever lived in Norfolk and Virginia Beach (!), and supporting the Society in any way he can. He is a prime example of what it means to be an active member and I hope you will each take the time to thank him personally the next time you see him. Secondly, I’d like to thank Stacy Apelt for his continued generous support of the scholarship raffle. His exquisitely made donations, whether jewelry or weaponry, are the highlight of the annual event. In edition, his presentation at a recent meeting was outstanding. Finally, once again, my thanks to John Wallace for his able stewardship of the annual Burns night event.

I wish Ham a successful, enjoyable term as President and look forward to supporting him throughout the year.

2003 Burns Nicht Supper Declared a Success

Addressing the HaggisOne hundred local members of the Scottish Community joined the Saint Andrew’s Society of Tidewater for its annual celebration of the birthday of Scotland’s Immortal Bard, Robert Burns. This year’s gala dinner party was held on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the Officers Club aboard U.S. Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. The highlight of the evening was the honoring of the Society’s charter members during this 20th year anniversary of the heritage groups’ founding. The wonderful dinners of prime rib and salmon were enhanced by traditional Haggis including its colorful ceremony, complete with piper, sword bearers, toasts and Rob Lockwood’s masterful rendition of Burns’ Ode to a Haggis. The dinner was followed by the evening’s dancing and listening entertainment provided by the ‘Doorway Singers’. The always popular raffle netted about $600 in donations for the Society’s Scholarship Fund, thanks to the generous contribution of sixteen prizes from our members and friends. The Society’s Scot of the Year Award for 2002 was presented during the ceremony to then current Society President, Carolyn L. Barkley. All in all, those in attendance enjoyed the evening of excellent food, wonderful entertainment, and traditional ceremony.

Parading the HaggisIt has been recently announced that next year’s Burns Nicht Supper will not be held at NAS Oceana due to major renovations scheduled at their Officer’s Club during the January 2004 period. The Society’s Board has made arrangements to locate the venue to Naval Station Dam Neck in Virginia Beach on Saturday, 18 January 2004. The ‘Doorway Singers’ have agreed to entertain us again at this 245th Robert Burns Birthday Celebration. JOIN US!
